In the 2023/2024 school year, the German-Polish student exchange between Schiller-Gymnasium Berlin and Liceum Ogólnokształcące nr IV in Wrocław took place for the second time – funded by the EU’s Erasmus+ programme. At the heart of the exchange were key questions: What does democracy mean today? What responsibilities do young people have in Europe? And how can we live together in diversity?

During the Polish group’s visit to Berlin (November 2023), students explored places of remembrance and learning such as the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Jewish Museum, the Topography of Terror, and the interactive EU exhibition Erlebnis Europa. These visits encouraged reflection on historical responsibility, democratic values, and the foundations of European cooperation.

In March 2024, the Berlin group travelled to Wrocław, where they participated in workshops on human rights, empathy and displacement (using the “Avatar Method”), and digital democracy challenges such as fake news and cyberbullying. The programme also included guided city tours, museum visits, and collaborative project work.
The exchange powerfully demonstrated the importance of democracy education, European understanding, and intercultural dialogue in today’s schools.
We look forward to continuing the project in 2024/2025.
