Fairy Tale Days at the US Embassy
Fairy Tale Days at the US Embassy

US Ambassador Philip Murphy and his wife Tammy read "Rumpelstiltskin" to 7th graders from Schiller

Everyone has the opportunity to listen to presentations of traditional and modern fairy tales from around the world during the annual Berlin Märchentage. However, not everyone has the chance to have an ambassador read to them!

The 7EU1 visited the United States Embassy for an exclusive reading by US Ambassador Philip Murphy and his wife Tammy. The couple took turns reading the fairy tale “Rumpelstiltskin” to the group in English, switching to the original German text for the classic line, “O wie schön, dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß”.

Even the photographer listened intently to the familiar story

Schiller pupils always have good questions!

After the reading, the Murphys engaged their listeners in a lively discussion about favorite fairy tales, cultural heritage, and the importance of traveling and living abroad. The Ambassador was impressed by the cultural diversity and inquisitive minds of the Schiller pupils, who had plenty of questions to ask. We learned that the Murphys love Berlin, they have four children whose favorite fairy tale was "Rumpelstiltskin", and yes, they have met President Barack Obama.

Thanks to Mrs. Hartmann for quickly reserving this event for the 7EU1!

While we waited for everyone to pass the security check, the official photographer set up the photo op.

Engaging Germany’s youth, none of whom were born during the Cold War, is a major focus of Ambassador Murphy’s, whether through town hall meetings, exchange programs or his regular communication through a variety of social media.  He often says, “the legacy of our time together in Germany will be measured by how well we ‘set the table’ for tomorrow, by how deeply today’s youth understand the ongoing relevance of the transatlantic bridge.  They are tomorrow’s leaders and our investment in their future is our highest priority.”
