The qualification phase

The path to the Abitur at Berlin's grammar schools takes 12 years.

After completing year 10, pupils move on to the upper secondary school and attend this for two school years at our grammar school. These 4 semesters are the so-called qualification phase.

Pupils enter the two-year qualification phase directly after the end of the 10th school year.
All subjects started in the lower secondary level can be continued in the upper secondary level and are permitted as Abitur examination subjects. The school generally offers the following subjects as advanced courses (if there are enough participants):

    German, English, French, Art, Music
    Geography, Political Science, History
    Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology.

Basic courses can also be taken in computer science, Latin, Italian and drama.

There are additional extension basic courses in languages, art and physics, and a seminar course is offered in the social sciences.

Please read the relevant sections for information on special aspects such as the Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin (SESB German-English) or optional courses and much more.

At the end of the gymnasiale Oberstufe, the overall qualification determines the successful completion of the school career.
