Commemoration of the victims of National Socialism
Commemoration of the victims of National Socialism

On the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism on 27 January, the Schiller-Gymnasium held a memorial service to commemorate the millions of people who were deprived of their dignity, their freedom and their lives.

The Senator for Education, Children and Families, Mrs Günther-Wünsch, and the Counsellor for Culture of the French Embassy, Mr Michelon, took part in the commemoration ceremony and gave the welcome addresses, honouring the need to keep the memory of the victims of the Holocaust alive.

The school community remembered the fate of a Jewish boy who once studied at Schillerstraße125 - the former Leibniz-Oberrealschule, now Schiller-Gymnasium - Norbert Bernheim. Over the past three years, a working group of pupils has researched the life of Norbert Bernheim, who attended our school until 1938, before fleeing to France. He was murdered at Auschwitz in 1943.

The results of the research were presented, including Norbert Bernheim's surviving letters, from which students read short extracts. One student also reported on her research into the school's history.

Auschwitz was a kind of man-made hell - a breach of civilisation that must never happen again. On this day, the Schiller community remembered its student Norbert Bernheim and many others.

Following the commemoration ceremony, the school community placed a memorial plaque for the school's victims of National Socialism on the outer façade of the school building.

The initiative to put up the plaque was initiated by parents, pupils and teachers. The memorial plaque is a visible sign of rememberance. We would like to thank the Friends' Association, individual donators and the organisation of campaigns that raised the generous funds.

As a state European school, we promote European cooperation. Together, we are committed to preserving tolerance, solidarity and humanity beyond national borders.
